Riggs Fails to Make Weight
By Administrator | November 19, 2005
Joe “Diesel” Riggs gave it a valiant try at Studio 54’s weigh-in for Saturday night’s welterweight title bout against reigning champ Matt Hughes at UFC 56 – Full Force, but after a series of tries, he ended up at a final weight of 172 1/2, two and a half pounds over the welterweight limit, thus rendering his fight against Hughes a non-title bout.
UFC 56’s co-featured bout will now be scheduled for three five-minute rounds. In the main event, UFC middleweight champ Rich Franklin defends his belt against Nate Quarry. Franklin, Quarry, Hughes, and all other participants on the card - which will air live on pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada – made weight successfully.
After stepping on the scales and weighing in at 171 pounds, Riggs – who by Nevada State Athletic Commission rules had two hours to lose the excess weight – worked out feverishly to make 170. It was to no avail, leaving Riggs with a lost title opportunity and Hughes with a shorter than expected night on Saturday.
